Blog Pause

Guys, I think I'm going to be taking a break from this here site for a bit--not sure how long, maybe about a month or so. I started doing another picture-a-day project and between that and some other side work, I'm pulling my hair out just a tad. So I figure--since no one on earth actually READS this--this might be the project to be put aside for a bit!

I guess I reserve the right to toss up a picture here and there if I take one I like, but more than likely, I'll just have to check in with my imaginary readers sometime this fall.

Ciao!

Sexaaaay

This is how sexy I can look using my new CPAP machine, should I choose to use the optional chin straps to keep my mouth firmly closed.

If it ever occurs that a man does see me in this, pray that afterward it won't be utterly impossible to ever get laid again.

Playing with fire... literally

I got a CPAP machine today; I had to go to this oxygen/medical supply place to pick it up and get oriented. In their office, in the midst of a big messy wall of framed photos, was this one: a guy from the 40's slinging a big oxygen tank around without a safety cap on it while smoking a cigarette. Too priceless.

Daily reminder to be a World Citizen

This is my new clock from Target, and I LUUURVE it. It's one of those ones where each face is labeled with a different city name--L.A., NYC, Buenos Aires, London, Berlin, etc. I set them all to the right times, and put it in my bathroom. Now as I brush my teeth or do my hair, I can look at it and think about all those different places, and what it might be like over in Tokyo when it's 4 in the morning or whatever, and be reminded that I am going to visit these places and as many others in the world as I possibly can.

The vet provokes different reactions...

My cat Wallace doesn't like the vet. Not even for checkups like this one. Maybe it's because they always tell him he's fat. (18 lbs! Mother of God!) On the other hand...

boobear_at_vet2

Boo Bear, a 1yr old miniature English bulldog, doesn't seem to mind the vet so much. In fact, I doubt she minds anything. Her owner says she even loves going to the groomer. Maybe it's her pink nail polish that's cheering her up.

My view on the way to San Diego Comic-Con

For four hours.

I hear San Diego is scenic, but sorry, I'm not seeing it. (Literally. )

Also, on this trip I took this picture of myself behind the wheel:

Coincidentally, my friend Tom took this picture of himself driving the same route:

The pain of the 5 freeway, she is universal.

Sci Fi Channel booth at Comic Con 2007

It wasn't really a booth per se, because...nothing happened there. No one was manning it, they didn't sell or give anything out. It just had a few video screens showing their stuff (and the ambient color kept changing) and it just...existed. And apparently was a place to sit and hang out. And look like you were in an episode of "Laugh-In."

Cool booths

These were some cool booths in a San Diego restaurant. I felt like they were either giant wicker water drops, or birdcages with a cover charge.

Edited to add: Looks like the folks over at Apartment Therapy had their eyes on the same thing.

Furry

Just trying a macro shot on something other than a flower, seeing if I could find some interesting texture. But I think my equipment is not quite up to achieving the effects I'd hoped. Plus, Wallace wouldn't hold still. He kept breathing. Selfish little bastard.

I didn't say it'd be a good picture a day.

Are you feeling gastronomically brave?

Franks Coffee Shop in Burbank is THE most hardcore, decades-old, time-machine, never-changed throwback diner EVER. It's one of the only places to eat within walking distance of my work, so even though you have to be feeling really brave to go in, occasionally we chance it. Even then it's best if you don't look too closely at how clean (or not) the place is kept.

IMG_0812
Clearly, the ambiance is a powerful magnet that draws people irresistibly.

IMG_0816
The interior. The window shade thingies (visible at top right) are astounding up close--they're plastic and interlocking and indescribable and so 70's Brady Bunch and AMAZING. I dearly wish someone would clean them up to their former orange-and-beige glory, but at the moment they're kind of in grungy tatters. If a decorator could somehow acquire them to put on the huge windows of someone's big modern loft apartment, that someone would have the grooviest pad in history.

IMG_0817
Some locals share their views on undoubtedly important stuff.

IMG_0819
And finally, the wait staff that makes it all happen. My friends swear they've actually ordered things here and had one of the waitresses tell them no, those things were too inconvenient for her, order something else.

Ball O' Hair

Returning to my promised Fly On The Wall photography style (I have the damndest time staying on topic), I present Ball O'Hair Lady.

I must say I do wish I could have sat at the table with her and done a real portrait. But I didn't see how, since my intro--were I truthful--would have been something like: "Hello, your hair is TOTALLY FREAKISH! Can I snap a picture so my friends and I can laugh?"

Greek Guy

(I keep skipping days between posts. Oopsie. :-/)

I took this picture on our last night in Athens--I couldn't pass up that guy in that shirt. And the thing is, I could totally imagine this Greek guy living in NYC and standing in front of a t-shirt shop there. This picture is totally interchangeable!

Balancing

During our recent bus tour's time in Greece, we were taken to yet another "kickback" store (where the guide, I'm assuming, gets a kickback for dragging us out of our way to said dumb overpriced store and pretending there's something special about it). The pottery therein was overpriced and I was feeling rebellious, so I went outside and took pictures of all the stuff that had been thrown into the store's side yard, that they ostensibly didn't want us to see. There was a lot of it.

This young lady presided over things from a precarious perch.

Hello Love Experiment

I met these fine people on the corner of Vermont and Hollywood Blvd., in Silverlake. They're a part of the Hello Love Experiment, and were giving out sisterly love (and tee shirts!) for free. Seriously. Not an attached string in sight.

Hello Love Experiment

In case it's not immediately apparent, I've been--as the British might say--"faffing about" with the Lens Blur feature on Photoshop. On no known planet does a little camera like mine give you depth of field. (Although...maybe it does, and I just don't know how to use it.) The above experiment didn't come out great, but...I did say it was faffing.

Hello Love Experiment

Even more faffing! Not nuts about this one either, but...what the hey.

Gino the Wonder Dog!

In Lucerne, Switzerland, this dog was playing in the lake with his owner. The owner would throw this stick far out into the lake, and Gino would eagerly swim out and get it. Our group--about 45 people--was cheering him on and yelling "Good dog!", but he was utterly, happily focused--he didn't care about anything but his owner and that stick.

Haven't been posting much while I'm traveling--functional internet access is too hard to come by. I have indeed been taking like 75 pictures a day, though. :) I'll start posting regularly again when I come home.

Good lookin'

IMG_0905

I went to the dog park the other day to take pictures, and this guy was my choice for the Most Awesomely Quirky-Looking Dog Award. (I mean, the ears alone should qualify him.) He was quite the sweetie, and seemed to feel I was very tasty, if all the licking was any indication.

Then I noticed he'd been sporting an erection throughout the proceedings and felt our time was over. I know, it's a dog, but...just how I felt.

I have many more dog park pictures, which I'll post at some later point...when I'm not about to leave for the airport in two hours for a trip to Europe.

The side of the Wiltern Theater in L.A., an Art Deco landmark. This doesn't really show the building, of course, but I think it's interesting how, on the right, vintage neon contrasts with modern (and some might say tacky) neon.

(*Don't try this at home. Or rather...at car.)

Layout probs

I don't know what's going on around here, but I've discovered that whenever I post something new ("new" as in "after June 12th"), it throws the whole layout off. Suddenly the sidebar gets squished down below all the posts. As you probably will notice, I have done exactly that with this post, blown the whole nice balanced layout thingy to smithereens.

I have a vague idea of why it's happening--new posts are throwing code into the mix that messes with the greater page layout code--but I don't know where the wrench in the works is actually lurking.

This is the reason I didn't post yesterday, though I tried to. And it's also the reason I won't post today, except to say that I'm not posting. I hope to fix it soon and then resume posting.

(Of course, those last three sentences presuppose that someone, ANYONE in the entire world is actually reading this thing, and that such announcements are necessary. As we all know that's not true, I guess I can do anything I want.)

You're so nauti...cal.

I drove past this place yesterday, and though I think I've seen it before, it was obvious that this was my picture for the day.

Methinks somebody read a little too much Mark Twain growing up, and then decided to be an architect. The windows are portholes. WITH bars on them--personally, I think you could ditch that feature. Dude, if anybody could even FIT through that tiny round space to get into your house, they'd deserve whatever they came to steal. God knows the residents must not be getting much light as it is, without adding the extra hardware.

I tried Googling this place before I posted, but amazingly, found nothing. I put in "boat," "house," "weird," "architecture," "los angeles," "silverlake," and the names of the streets on whose corner it is. Nuthin'. Somebody has to have said something about this place previously, and darn it, I want some history.

But for now, I guess we'll just have to settle for looking at it, and pretending we're at Tom Sawyer's island at Disneyland.

All aboard.

Musso and Frank

Musso and Frank, still surviving even though it's disturbingly marooned in the anarchy of Hollywood Blvd. And though it still has that old dark-and-heavy interior decoration and famous martinis, apparently it doesn't boast old waiters, which really are the best thing to encounter when you go to a Hollywood throwback kind of place.

They used to have those at the old Dupar's in the Farmers Market--waitresses who'd been there practically since the place opened. 70-year-old ladies who either tottered along and called you "dear" or snarked half-kiddingly at you that they didn't "do" glasses of water. People Who Remember The Place When and Still Do Things The Old Way are awesome for the ambiance.

But a friend of mine complained that the last time he got a martini at Musso's, the bar was manned by Latin American immigrants--not that there's anything wrong with that. It's just that they didn't know the history of the place or the stories, even if they could have told 'em in English.
